Lingshan Ancient Temple in Quanzhou, Fujian

Lingshan Ancient Temple is located in the northeast of Dongzhou (Liancheng) Peninsula, Jingfeng Town, Hui’an County, Quanzhou, Fujian. The exact year of temple construction is unverifiable, but it is likely that it was built shortly after the city was established, and later rebuilt at the end of the Qing Dynasty. The temple is nestled in the mountains and holds a rich cultural heritage, commanding a strategic position at the Weicheng Ridge, controlling the Douwei Pass.

Overlooking the Dongming Sea, the scenery is picturesque with an abundance of beautiful views, including Liancheng Weicheng, Guanyin Pavilion, and Release Pond, among others. The main hall primarily worships Guanyin. There is a long poem inscribed by a local literati during the Xuantong Xinhai year. On the main hall’s large station top, there is a calligraphy piece by Chongfu Temple’s Miaoyue and Gou, titled ‘Lingshan Ancient Temple’.

The main hall’s doors are adorned with carvings of ‘Three Kingdoms Stories’ and dragon and tiger patterns, which are lifelike and exquisitely crafted. In addition to the main hall’s primary worship of Guanyin, there is a Wenchang Temple on the west side, which enshrines Kuixingye (the Five Wenchang) and Wen Yuan Gong Xiang Gongye on both sides. Inside the Wenchang Temple, there are three pairs of couplets inscribed by the famous Hui’an literati Li Mu Han.

The Liancheng Temple’s abbot has preserved the lotus pond in front of the temple from the past, the ancient well, and the release pond to the east. The temple is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
