Lady Huahua: A Heroine in Chengdu’s History

Lady Huahua, whose surname was Ren, was from Chengdu, Shujun (or Wushan according to some accounts). She was a female general in the Tang Dynasty and the concubine of Cui Xu, the military governor of Xichuan. In the 3rd year of Dali in the Tang Dynasty (768), when Cui Xu went to the imperial court to report on matters, Yang Zilin, the governor of Luzhou, took the opportunity to attack Chengdu. Lady Huahua recruited soldiers to resist the attack and defeated Yang Zilin, thus saving Chengdu.

The imperial court conferred the title of Duke of Jiguo on Cui Xu and gave him the name Cui Ning. At the same time, Lady Huahua was named Lady of Jiguo. During the Five Dynasties period, a “Shrine of the Saintly Lady” was built beside the Huahua Brook. In the 20th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1894), the Shrine of Lady Huahua was rebuilt and her statue was erected. Since then, it has been damaged many times.

In 1983, the shrine was renovated. It is open from 09:00 – 18:00 throughout the year. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on the day.
