Nanguan Catholic Church – A Historical Landmark in Shenyang

Nanguan Catholic Church is located on Lejiao Road in Shenhe District, Shenyang City. It was first established in the fourth year of the Guangxu Emperor’s reign (1873). During the 26th year of Guangxu’s reign (1900), it was destroyed by the Boxers. It was reconstructed in 1912 with the indemnity from the Qing court and is now a provincial-level cultural heritage site in Liaoning Province.
The entire structure of Nanguan Catholic Church is divided into two courtyards, east and west, with the church located at the northern end of the eastern courtyard. It measures 66 meters in length from north to south, 17 meters in width from east to west, and stands 40 meters high, with a construction area of 1100 square meters, capable of accommodating 1500 people at the same time.

The church is a typical Gothic-style architecture, featuring two square pyramidal spires decorated with crosses at the top. At the front of the church, there are three arched doors, flanked by rows of small windows, with twenty-four stone pillars inside supporting the structure, and the vaults are adorned with large patterns. In the western courtyard, there is a four-story building which is the bishop’s residence built in 1926.

The church is open all year round from 09:00 to 16:00; however, the specific business status depends on the daily opening conditions.
